From the recording The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is a soulful, piano-driven anthem about the most important territory we will ever guard: the human heart.

Moving from wounds, temptation, anger, and the struggle for control toward surrender, deliverance, and living water, the song asks one defining question: Who will rule this heart of mine?

Drawing from Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness and His surrender in Gethsemane—“Not my will, but Yours be done”—The Sanctuary declares that pain, fear, pride, bitterness, fame, and woundedness may knock at the door, but they do not get the throne.

With warm male vocals, expressive piano, saxophone, gospel/soul textures, and an emotional journey from searching to homecoming, The Sanctuary is ultimately a prayer:

“Jesus, this sanctuary is Yours.”

THE SANCTUARY
Key: D Major | 76 BPM | 4/4

[Original strong piano-led singer-songwriter ballad with saxophone gospel/soul and restrained rock influence. Mature warm male vocal, intimate and conversational. Begin solo grand piano, nocturnal and searching. Gradually add bass, light drums, strings, then organic gospel backing vocals near climax. Preserve deliberate silences. Avoid modern worship clichés, EDM, excessive vocal runs or huge cinematic production. Emotional arc: searching → wounded heart → temptation → surrender → deliverance → living water. Final section feels like homecoming.]

[INTRO — D A/C# Bm7 Gadd9 — solo piano]

[VERSE 1]
D
Ummm, ummm, oh yeah ..Well, woke again in the middle of the night,
A/C#
Searching in my dreams for a road that I could trust,
Bm7
I've climbed enough mountains to know that being higher
Gadd9
Doesn't mean you're any closer to God.
D/F#
I've carried some wounds I never asked for,
A
I've wanted some things I shouldn't choose,
Bm7
And somewhere underneath all of the noise
Gadd9 Asus4 A
A quiet question keeps breaking through:

[STOP]

Bm7 Gadd9
Hmmm oh...hmmm .. WHO? I ask myself WHO will rule this heart of mine?

[CHORUS]
D A/C#
This heart is a sanctuary,
Bm7 Gadd9
And there is only one throne.
D/F# A
Above everything that I could ever guard,
Bm7 Gadd9
Lord, keep this heart Your own.
D A/C#
Ummm , ahhhh, When fear comes knocking at the doorway,
Bm7 Gadd9
When pride would take Your place,
Em7 D/F#
Let every room within this sanctuary
Gadd9 A D
Still belong to Grace.

[VERSE 2]
D
They can wound you deeper than words can tell,
A/C#
Leave scars no human eye can see,
Bm7
And anger shouts in my sanctuary, "Give them back what they gave to you!
Gadd9
But friend, listen closely, DO NOT Let their evil choose who you're gonna be."
D/F#
Ohh hhh, yeahhh, I've HEARD a child break years of silence
A
With more reason than most to hate,
Bm7
But somehow he knew - that they hadn't really won
Gadd9 A
Because hatred was not allowed to cross the sanctuary gates.

Em7
They may wound the walls,
Gadd9 D
But they don't get the throne.

[CHORUS 2]
D A/C#
This heart is a sanctuary,
Bm7 Gadd9
And there is only one throne.
D/F# A
Above everything that I could ever guard,
Bm7 Gadd9
Lord, keep this heart Your own.
D A/C#
When pain comes knocking at the doorway,
Bm7 Gadd9
When vengeance calls my name,
Em7 D/F#
Let the King within this sanctuary
Gadd9 A D
Decide what leaves this place.

[VERSE 3]
Bm7
There were stones beside the starving Savior,
Gadd9
There were kingdoms waiting from on high,
D
Every road said, "Use Your gift to serve Yourself,"
A
Every crown had someone else's price.
Bm7
Then one night in the olive garden,
Gadd9
With the bitter cup before the Son,
D/F#
Jesus gave the answer every heart must reckon with—

[ALL INSTRUMENTS DROP]

Em7
Not my will...
Gm6 D
but Yours be done.

[BRIDGE]
Bm7
Not My will -
Gadd9
But Thy will be done.
D
Two roads beneath the same old sun,
A
One reaches upward for the throne,
Bm7
One kneels before the Holy One.

Gadd9
I cannot keep these walls from shaking,
D/F#
I cannot promise I won't bleed,
Em7
But what has wounded me will never be
Gadd9 A
The god that governs me.

Bm7
No fear, no shame,
Gadd9
No fame upon the throne,
D/F#
No bitterness, no wounded pride,
A
No kingdom of my own.

[STOP — SOLO PIANO]

Gadd9 A D
Jesus, this Sanctuary is Yours.

[FINAL CHORUS]
D A/C#
My heart is Your sanctuary,
Bm7 Gadd9
And You alone are it's King.
D/F# A
Above everything that I will ever guard,
Bm7 Gadd9
Guard the place from which life springs.
D A/C#
You can lead me through the waters,
Bm7 Gadd9
You can lead me through the flame,
Em7 D/F#
And I'll stand upon the other side
Gadd9 A D
Still calling on Your name.

D A/C#
My heart is Your sanctuary,
Bm7 Gadd9
Jesus, keep it till I'm home.
D/F# A
From the first steps of this journey
Bm7 Gadd9
Till I stand before Your throne.
Em7 D/F#
Let living water rise within me,
Gadd9 Bm7
Let the river run deep and free
Em7 D/F#
Flow from the heart that You have made
Gadd9 A D
Your sanctuary.

[OUTRO — SOLO PIANO]

Bm7
I searched for rivers in the darkness,
Gadd9
For somewhere I belonged,
D/F#
Then the King came near my sanctuary,
A D
And I found the river all along.

[LONG PAUSE]

Gadd9
Not my will...
Gm6 D
Yours be done.
