From the recording Lord Dig Me Some Ears
**Lord, Dig Me Some Ears! — The Old Coal Miner's Prayer**
A powerful Appalachian country gospel ballad infused with deep Southern gospel vocals, haunting harmonica, weeping steel guitar, bluegrass banjo, and New Orleans jazz-blues.
After forty years of blasting coal from the mountains, an old miner loses his hearing. Alone in his little mountain shack, he discovers the extraordinary Hebrew words of Psalm 40:6: “Ears You have dug for me.”
His prayer changes. More than hearing the world again, he longs to hear God's voice, understand the Father's heart, and walk in His ways.
Then his Bible opens to Mark 7. Jesus' Aramaic command, “Ephphatha,” is whispered into the silence—followed by a thunderous “BE OPENED!”
The music erupts into a jubilant gospel celebration as the miner discovers the healing compassion of Jesus.
A joyful testimony of faith, obedience, healing, and the Father's love.
**Scripture:** Psalm 40:6–8; Psalm 51:10; Mark 7:31–37.

Em C
Forty years beneath that mountain,
G B7
Dynamite and coal-dust shoes.
Em C
I could hear the thunder rollin',
G B7 Em
Till the blasts stole all my tunes.
Em C
Now I sit beside my Bible,
G B7
In a shack above the mine.
Em C
Can't hear the birds or rain a-fallin',
G B7 Em
But I hear You deep inside.
[VERSE 2 — THE HEBREW]
Em C
David wrote in Psalm forty,
G B7
Verse six caught my eye.
Em C
"Ears You've dug for me," it told me,
G B7 Em
And I wondered, Lord, just why.
Am Em
Oznayim karita li,
C B7
That's the Hebrew David knew.

I've been diggin' holes in mountains,
G B7 Em
Now dig my ears for You!

G D
Lord, dig me some ears!
C G
Dig 'em deep and dig 'em clear!
G D
Not just sounds from this old world,
C D G
But Your heart I long to hear!
C G
Take my pride and stubborn will,
Am D
Teach my restless soul be still.
G D
Abba, make Your ways so dear,
C D G
Lord, dig me some ears!
[VERSE 3 — THE HEART OF GOD]
Em C
Sacrifice without obedience
G B7
Ain't the thing You most desire.
Em C
Give me ears that hear Your calling,
G B7 Em
Give my heart Your holy fire.
Am Em
Teach me mercy, truth and justice,
C B7
Teach me how to walk Your ways.
Em C
More than hearing earthly music,
G B7 Em
Let my life become Your praise.
[VERSE 4 — THE PAGES TURN]
Em C
Then the pages started rustlin',
G B7
In that little miner's shack.
Em C
They fell open to Mark seven,
G B7 Em
And I couldn't turn 'em back.
Am Em
Jesus touched a deaf man's ears,
C B7
Touched his tongue and looked above.
Em C
Then He sighed and spoke one word,
G B7 Em
With the power of heaven's love.
