A Man Named Rio
**An Original Country Gospel Story-Song**

Saddle up for a Texas-sized tale filled with cowboy humor, family feuds, and an unexpected encounter with Jesus!

When a quiet, half-Mexican, half-Comanche drifter named Rio takes a job on a troubled Texas ranch, nobody can understand his remarkable patience and peace. While the family fights like “cats in a sack in a Texas rain,” Rio carries a secret that money, land, and cattle could never buy.

With classic outlaw-country storytelling, a deep cowboy baritone, acoustic guitar, fiddle, and harmonica, this unforgettable story takes a surprising turn when Rio reveals the Man who changed his life forever—**Jesus Christ, the Man from Galilee.**

Inspired by Jesus' teaching about building upon the Rock (Matthew 7:24–27), *A Man Named Rio* reminds us that storms may come to every home, but a life built upon Christ has a foundation that will stand.

[INTRO — SPOKEN, GUITAR PICKING]

Ummm, hmmm , yeah...Giddy up it's time to ride.
Hello friends my name is Rio and I've got a story to tell about a family who moved to Texas,
Where the Rio Grande runs wide.
Bought a desert ranch and a thousand acres,
With a whole batch of troubles inside.

Daddy had a mean rattlesnake temper,
Mama could outshout a freight train.
The kids were always choosing sides,
And the hound dog just prayed for rain.

[VERSE 1 — RIO ARRIVES]

One morning came a dusty ole drifter,
With a weathered face and rounded cowboy hat with one single feather from a hawk standing tall.
Half Mexican and half Comanche,
Didn't say much more than that.

"My name's Rio," said the stranger,
"I can rope and mend a fence."
So they hired him for the cattle,
And gave him a room behind the pens.

He worked from dawn till sundown,
Never fussed or raised his voice.
When the world came crashing sideways,
Giddy up pony is what he often said no matter the heat or rain there was always work to do.

[VERSE 2 — THE MYSTERY]

When Daddy lost his patience,
Rio never answered back.
When Mama burned the supper,
He just thanked her for the snack.

When the youngest broke a window,
Rio helped him make it right.
And he'd hum beneath the stars
By his bunkhouse late at night.

That family couldn't figure
What made Rio different so.
They had land and cows and money,
But a peace they'd never known.

[VERSE 3 — THE STORM]

Then a Texas storm came rolling,
Thunder shaking every wall.
And that family started fighting
Over who was wrong in it all.

Rio leaned against the doorway,
With a grin beneath his hat.
Said, "I've seen some things in Texas,
But I've never seen the likes of that!

You're like a sack of fighting cats,
Tied up in a Texas rain!
Everybody's scratching everybody,
And nobody's got a thing to gain!"

[CHORUS — PLAYFUL, FULL BAND]

Cats in a sack in a Texas rain,
Scratching and hollering and raising Cain!
Everybody's right, everybody's sore,
Nobody knows what they're fighting for!

You can own a thousand acres,
You can build a house with pride,
But if you build upon the sinking sand,
That house won't stand the tide!

[VERSE 4 — THE QUESTION]

Well, Daddy nearly choked on coffee,
Mama laughed until she cried.
Then Daddy pulled a chair up,
Said, "Rio, there's something inside.

We've watched you now for months, son,
And you don't act like other men.
When trouble comes, you smile through it.
Where'd you find that peace, my friend?

We've got everything but happiness,
And we want what you have found."
Rio slowly set his coffee down,
And the room made not a sound.

[VERSE 5 — THE REVELATION]

[MUSIC DROPS TO ONE ACOUSTIC GUITAR]

"I was camping by the river,
With my troubles and my shame.
Had a heart as hard as desert stone,
And nobody left to blame.

Then a tall Man came to see me,
With such kindness in His eyes.
He knew the secrets of my heart,
And every tear I'd tried to hide.

He told me of two houses,
One on rock and one on sand.
Said the storms would come to both of them,
But only one would stand.

Then He laid His hand upon my shoulder,
And spoke so tenderly:

'Rio, here's what you've gotta do.
Build your life upon Me.'"

[ONE BEAT OF SILENCE]

[BRIDGE — QUIET, DEEP BARITONE]

Daddy whispered, "Who was that Man?"
Rio smiled and answered plain:

"Jesus Christ, the Man from Galilee.
I've never been the same.

He took this broken drifter,
Made a new man out of me.
And the Rock beneath my feet today
Is the One from Galilee."

[VERSE 6 — THE FAMILY]

Well, Daddy looked at Mama,
And Mama took his hand.
The children gathered round them,
As they began to understand.

They bowed their heads together,
Right there in that kitchen room.
And asked the Lord to build a home
Where anger once had bloomed.

The storms didn't stop forever,
But their hearts began to change.
And that old ranch down in Texas
Was never quite the same.

[FINAL CHORUS — JOYFUL, FULL BAND]

No more cats in a sack in a Texas rain,
Scratching and hollering and raising Cain!
The winds still blow, the rivers rise,
But they've got a Rock that stands the tide!

You can own a thousand acres,
You can build a house of stone,
But unless the Lord's the Builder,
A house ain't really home!

[OUTRO — SPOKEN, PLAYFUL]

Well, they hired Rio to mend their fences,
But the Lord sent Rio to mend their home.

And when that family started fussing,
Rio'd grin and tip his hat.

"Remember what the Man from Galilee said...

Build your life upon the Rock, folks...

And leave them cats out of the sack!"

[FIDDLE FLOURISH — FINAL GUITAR STRUM]
